Stress and heart diseaseAs stress reaches epidemic proportions in our fast-paced society, it has a tremendously negative impact on your health. Heart disease is the number one stress-related disorder in our society; more people die of cardiovascular disease than any other stress related illness. Stress affects you continuously, even when you are not aware that you are out of your comfort range and have exceeded your capacity. When overwhelmed, your physiology produces an excess of stress hormones. These biochemical changes interfere with metabolic pathways and cause imbalances in your mind and body. When efficient functioning is reduced, your physiology makes mistakes, with results that can lead to premature aging and disease, such as cardiovascular problems, anxiety, fatigue, anger, relationship problems, insomnia and more.A series of steps leads to mind/body interpretation of a situation as stressful. Dr. Deepak Chopra discusses this response syndrome in his tape series entitled Ageless Body Timeless Mind. The three stages of the stress response are:
When you regard a situation as threatening, the adrenal and pituitary glands release a cascade of hormonal responses in your body, which trigger the “fight or flight response. The sympathetic branch of the autonomic nervous system mobilizes your body for defensive action.31 Problems are caused by other chemicals such as cortisol and catecholamines, including epinephrine and norepinephrine, which lead to the creation of leukotrienes and thromboxanes. Free radicals, which are produced through this chemical pathway, attack cells and creates toxic wastes. As the process continues, catecholamines themselves break down into free radicals. Free radicals are unstable destructive “molecular sharks” that attempt to stabilize themselves by stealing an electron from atoms and molecules of adjacent cells. This process sets in motion a chain reaction that transforms these molecules into free radicals. The energy producing organelle of the cell, the mitochondria, is particularly vulnerable to this damage. The degeneration of the mitochondria is considered to be a major contributor to the process of cellular aging and death. A primary cause of age related degenerative diseases and the aging process itself is damage caused by free radicals. In addition to the many other detrimental effects of stress, it also greatly increases the body’s need for many nutrients, which are often already deficient.
