Transcendental Meditation reduces cholesterolTranscendental Meditation is a simple technique that reduces high blood pressure and cholesterol, two significant aspects of cardiovascular disease. A review of the literature shows that acute and chronic stress raises serum lipids associated with clinical coronary events. As Transcendental Meditation reduces stress, the body secretes fewer stress hormones, thus reducing free radical damage. Free radicals, “molecular sharks”, can scar arteries; the body patches the scars with cholesterol, which contributes to cholesterol deposits.Meditating can even lower abnormally high cholesterol levels. Excess cholesterol in the blood is correlated with fatty plaque deposits, which clog the coronary arteries. The resultant restriction of vessels makes excess cholesterol a primary risk factor for heart attack. Serum cholesterol is determined by the interplay of physical factors such as diet, heredity, digestive efficiency, and liver function. Only recently has medical research confirmed that the mind also plays a vital role in determining cholesterol readings. In 1979 Israeli researchers M. J. Cooper and M. M. Aygen showed that meditation could be of significant value in lowering cholesterol. The researchers selected twenty-three patients, all with elevated cholesterol levels, but of comparable age, weight, diet preferences, and exercise routines. Twelve of the subjects were taught TM, and practiced it for eleven months; the other eleven were control subjects who did not meditate. The meditating group demonstrated a marked drop in cholesterol levels, from an average of 255 to 225; there was no significant decrease noted in the control group.49 A separate study by the same researchers showed similar reductions, and also demonstrated that an elevated cholesterol reading within the normal range can be lowered.
